As we come out of recession, more and more people in the UK are becoming interested in making a career change and retraining to become hypnotherapy and NLP practitioners.
Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) have become increasingly popular – and indeed fashionable – in recent years. But aside from people like Derren Brown, who has turned his skill into entertainment, these complementary therapies are recognised and respected methods of helping people to overcome fears, anxieties and more serious emotional issues.
Journalist Lucy Cavendish has recently undergone some major changes in herself, and is training to become a therapist.
Hypnotherapy and NLP are also accepted practices in the workplace, and are used to help give a competitive edge, increase confidence, and for team building and public speaking.
One highly qualified and experienced hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner in Norwich, Joy Gower, also provides unique and comprehensive training for those who want to take up this career. Students come to her from all over the UK, she has even taken students from Germany. Recently she has seen a real surge in people who want to train as practitioners.
“Now the UK is in recovery it seems that more people are thinking of making a career change, retraining and starting afresh,” says Joy.
“The human mind is fascinating. I have a passion for helping people to unlock their own potential and to live better lives. I am also passionate about helping to train those who share my passion and who want to help others to lead happier, more productive lives.
“What I offer is a unique, verified and externally accredited, 10-month course that will equip graduates to start their career.
“My students come from every walk of life and are both young and old. Some don’t want to practice as a career at all, but are just fascinated by the subject and want to immerse themselves in it. So it really does appeal to a huge cross section of people.”
So what makes Joy’s courses unique? “We offer the best possible training because the diploma our students gain is externally verified by the awarding body NCFE – a leading provider of nationally recognised qualifications. This is a customised award which follows the national occupational standards.
“Other providers offer ‘diplomas’ or ‘certifications’, but they are not externally verified, and providing they pay their money to a hypnotherapy body, that’s it. The school is never monitored to find out what training is really offered and what the students think of it.
“Our training is approved by the National Council for Hypnotherapy and the NCFE. They visit us every year and assess us carefully. We have so far always come out with flying colours.
“Also, our courses are hypnotherapy and NLP combined, for one price, but most others offer just hypnotherapy.
“Our training is very interactive, hands-on, fully monitored and supported throughout. We offer a great deal of aftercare, which many other training bodies do not.
“I have had to retrain students who have taken courses elsewhere. Hypnotherapy and NLP are very complex and, if not carried out with the correct training, potentially harmful. Training must be thorough, monitored and properly accredited.”
Many of Joy’s students are now enjoying successful careers as practitioners. Jilly Cutting, from Norwich, came to see Joy as a client 10 years ago because she needed help with her confidence to sing. As a result she became so interested in hypnotherapy and NLP that she decided to train to become a practitioner herself.
“Initially I was a bit nervous about the course, but Joy is so warm and approachable that I quickly settled in and realised that it was for me,” said Jilly. “The training was very hands-on and Joy was always there for guidance and support, but at the same time encouraged us to be inquisitive and ask questions.
“After I qualified I took another course with Joy in Business & Life Coaching which has really helped me. I am now a practitioner on a part-time basis, which I do alongside my other business, and have a number of clients. Many of them have subsequently trained with Joy to also become practitioners in their own right. I am 69 now and when I retire at 75 I plan to be a practitioner full time.”
Matt Reed, 36, qualified as a practitioner this year after graduating from Joy’s course. He has now set up a part-time practice in East Dereham and is gradually building up a client base.
“My career was in sales and marketing for many years, and I got most satisfaction in delivering sales training sessions and helping others to develop their skills and improve their personal and professional performance. It was during this time that I became fascinated with how powerful NLP is and discovered how it is incredibly effective when combined with Hypnosis.
I eventually decided that gaining an accredited qualification in the field of NLP and Hypnotherapy would not only be rewarding, but it would give me an invaluable skill set that I could use both personally and professionally for the rest of my life.”
“I did a great deal of research to find the best training provider. It was vital to me to find someone who was qualified and accredited to the highest standards, and very experienced too. Hypnotherapy and NLP are very powerful and influencing, so you have to know what you’re doing. Joy has all these qualifications, where many other providers do not. After I spoke to her and others I knew she was the best choice.
“It was also important to me to choose training that gave me the best value for money, and where I would be qualified to the highest standards,” Matt continued. “Joy’s students qualify with both an NLP certificate and hypnotherapy diploma combined, but many other providers offer just hypnotherapy – and often at a lower level of qualification.
“Other courses were cheaper and shorter in length, but they were not offering the same end product at all. I want to be able to deliver the highest standards as a practitioner and make the best investment in myself, and I felt Joy’s course was the only one that could really deliver this.”
Matt added: “The training was excellent, a small group, very closely supervised and she helped us develop the practical skills we needed very quickly – to give us confidence. It was hard work, but it should be hard work – you can’t cut corners, you need to put in the time to develop the skills you need.
“During the course, two profound, life changing things happened to me a on personal and professional front, and having reached a crossroads in my life I asked myself what I really wanted to do…what was my passion? I knew it was to help people to change and develop themselves and I decided that becoming a hypnotherapy and NLP practitioner would give me the fulfilling and rewarding career I wanted.”
Tanya Sadler, 38, lives in Needham Market, in Suffolk. Her route to becoming a hypnotherapy and NLP practitioner is also borne out of experience and a deep-seated desire to reach out and help people with their emotional problems.
“In 2008 I hit a bit of a wall in my life”, says Tanya. “I was going through a divorce, commuting to London and working 14-hour days for my job and it all just caved in on me. I had a massive panic attack one day on the train, and I realised that I needed to rethink my life and also get some help.
“I had some counselling in the form of the Lightening Process, which is a 3-step therapy that uses many NLP techniques. It worked well for me and as a result I became fascinated by why it had worked. I wanted to find out more about the human mind and how NLP and hypnosis can help those with emotional issues. I wanted it to play a greater role in my life, so I started to research training courses online.
“I looked at many training providers, both locally and further afield, and it became clear very quickly that Joy Gower’s course was the only one locally that could offer the level of training, experience and qualifications I wanted. Even the courses out of the region didn’t offer the same hands-on and experience-based learning that is so vital in learning this skill. It was without question the best value for money – and after I met Joy I knew that she was the person I wanted to train me.
“There were just 10 of us on the course, a nice small group, which meant Joy could give us all the personal attention and supervision we needed to learn the skills quickly, and be able to practice them regularly. Joy’s style is very warm, humerous and she is more than willing to share her own personal stories to help and advise. It was a superb way to learn this fascinating set of skills.”
Tanya qualified in 2011, and is using her skills to branch out into some fascinating areas of therapy. “Over time I realised that my interest was in coaching people, so I took Joy’s Life and Business Coaching course,” she explains.
“I am also a photographer, and I do a lot of wedding work. So now I am counselling brides on their wedding day. If they are getting very emotional, I can do a quick change of state that normally snaps them out of it, and then coach them in a more positive way to be. Many brides hate the idea of getting upset walking to their groom. I also work with a lot of models, helping with their self esteem.
“Recently I have also become very interested in horses, so my dream is to work with people in an occupational sense, out in the fresh air, with nature. Team this with photography and all sorts of feelings, tastes, sounds and smells – it’s the type of experience I hope many people will thrive on.”
Tanya adds: “My passion is to help people, to reach out to those who are desperate and suffering and who need support from people like me who understand a little about the human mind. Joy thinks like that too, she cares, and that’s what this is all about, isn’t it?”
